Otoplasty

Ear Surgery

Overview

Otoplasty, also known as ear surgery or ear pinning, is a cosmetic procedure that corrects the shape, size, or position of the ears. It is a common procedure for children and adults alike.

Otoplasty can be used to treat a variety of ear deformities, including:

  • Protruding ears (bat ears)
  • Oversized ears
  • Undersized ears
  • Misshapen ears
  • Ear injuries

Otoplasty Benefits

This procedure can repair cosmetic ear damage, fix facial aesthetics, and improve self-confidence. It can ultimately create a more natural shape and appearance of the ears. This procedure is minimally invasive and convenient.

Consultation

During consultation Dr. Cho will review your medical history. She will assess ear symmetry, size, and placement on physical examination. She will then discuss expectations, her surgical approach, recovery, and potential risks with surgery.

Pre-Op Care

Preparation for surgery will include medical examination with your primary care physician, basic blood work, eliminating smoking well in advance of surgery, and avoiding certain medications.

Recovery

You may experience some discomfort. Pain can be managed with over-the-counter medications. Pressure and excessive force should be avoided to ears and incisions. Dressings can be removed by Dr. Cho a few days postoperatively. You will notice an immediate change in appearance of your ears once the bandage has been removed. A loose headband may be required at night for a few weeks.

Ideal Candidate

Healthy individuals of any age once ears are fully developed are good candidates for this procedure. Full ear growth occurs by 7 years of age. Patients typically consider this surgery when their ears protrude extensively from their head, are larger in proportion to their head, or are dissatisfied with ear appearance. This may be a source of anxiety, depression, bullying, and negatively impact ones self image.
